ATT Audio Controls Studer Newsletter Autumn 2007
Hello and welcome to ATT Audio Controls first Studer newsletter. With so much happening around the world with Studer consoles we decided to tell you about some of the major purchases, as well as what is happening at ATT. First a word from HQ in Switzerland, Studer President Bruno Hochstrasser, advises that Studer is currently experiencing the most successful period of the companies 50 year history. Much of this success is due to the Vista range of digital consoles, in particular the Vista 8 and Vista 5. Bruno states that the success of the Vista range is mainly due to the Vistonics user interface, which has been welcomed and embraced all around the world and particularly the broadcast sector.

Perth takes delivery of their new SCore Live DSP engine for their
Vista 8 console. The Score replaces the Performa DSP core of
previous Vista consoles. The new SCore Live is twice as powerful as
the Performa in only a 6RU package. The SCore live is user
configurable to
maximise use of DSP’s in different applications.
A new facility in the DSP allows delays of up to 10 seconds to be
added to signals to compensate for video delays through satellite
links etc.
A new manufacturing/assembly facility is nearing completion here at ATT. This has been created to meet the demand for Merging Technologies Pyramix system and the Studer D21m I/O interface system, both of which are assembled in Australia by ATT. This new initiative gives us the potential to build up to 25 Pyramix systems per month and even more Studer D21m’s.

FAST, LOGICAL INTERFACE WITH DYNAMICS AND SNAPSHOT AUTOMATION
N
o
engineer can deny that digital mixing consoles make life easier.
Recall of every parameter, built-in dynamics and comprehensive
automation are functions that we've come to view as necessary. The
problem is that just about every digital console lacks a
one-control/one-function work surface, thus requiring the engineer to
dig into menus for important parameters and slowing down the process.
Optimized for use in live sound and broadcast applications where
speed is as important as sonic accuracy, Studer's Vista 8 modular
digital console brings a welcome change, furnishing the engineer with
a work surface where any function is no more than one button push
away.

The FOX Network’s Engineering and Operations (NE&O) team in Los Angeles is currently upgrading the audio facilities in its two primary production stages used for FOX Sports. Two Studer consoles are being installed as part of an initiative to fully overhaul the audio control suites in FOX’s Stage A and B, which previously used older analogue mixing consoles. Upon completion, both suites and stages will carry a fully digital audio and video spec.
The first phase of this project has been to install a 96-input Studer Vista 8 digital live production console into FOX Network Centre Stage A, which now hosts all of the network’s pre- and post-game Major League Baseball (MLB) coverage, including the Emmy Award–winning MLB on FOX Pregame Show hosted by Jeanne Zelasko with analyst Kevin Kennedy.
Sky
Italia has purchased one of the first Studer Vista 5 digital consoles

Sky's studios in Milan, the Sports Department has installed the
compact Vista 5 mixer in a dedicated audio studio, adjacent to the
busy production room where 16 commentators each work on a separate
monitor, covering different matches. All the matches in Italy's
Serie A League are covered here; this studio receives feeds from
stadia all over the country, adds commentary and prepares the
broadcast audio.
The Vista 5's compact frame and simple connectivity has enabled the Sky Italia team to squeeze it into a small temporary studio, completing the installation in just ten days. The 32-fader desk uses channel layers to distribute its feeds, which include 16 channels for the commentators, 16 channels of audio coming from the stadia, as well as auxiliary feeds such as intercom, checking on-air, etc. The VCA facilities are used to organise each match commentator in the studio with the right stadium feed, all of which have different levels. In total, more than 50 connections are made to different OB vans, making this quite a complex production to manage.
Studer
has received an order from BBC Resources for a second wraparound
Vista 8 digital audio console to be installed in Studio Four/TC4 at
Television Centre in west London. The desk will be configured
identically to the 72-fader Vista 8 supplied to Studio One/TC1 in
2005 (pictured) and is expected to be installed soon.
Fittingly, the order represents a milestone for Studer’s digital technology; this will be the 21st large-frame digital console to be delivered in the UK. Marking the occasion, sales manager Andrew Hills reflects on the success Studer is enjoying in the UK’s broadcast industry.

first Studer Vista 8 digital audio front of house console to be used
in Paris’ theatre district has been installed at the 1,000 seat
capacity Theatre de la Ville, which has chosen the board as the
digital platform for an extensive refurbishment program that will
take place during the next two years. In 2003, the audio production
team, led by Pierre Tamisier, began the search to replace the
theater’s 12-year-old Studer 900 analog console. Having
examined digital technology from several other leading manufacturers,
the group still wound up at the door of Studer’s French
distributor, with an order for a 32-fader Vista 8 with 10-fader
extension remote.
